STATEMENT HISTORY STRATEGIE ABOUT
STICHTING PROM ART COLLECTIVE
Other forms of doing art Artists can approach their place in society in many ways, but two strategies are especially common. When artists take the commercial path, they create works that are expected to be bought and sold in the market. When they take the institutional option, the main results are projects tailored to a particular player in the art world (for example, a museum’s external program). We believe that there are other ways to produce art in society that are worth pursuing. Our organisation aims to find ways to self-manage the making of art without depending solely on commodity-based circuits and traditional institutions. We will do so through an annual production program that contributes to its context in the Netherlands, Europe, and the global art-world.
History of Prom The project began in 2017 as an international art collective named PROM, founded by Javier Ruiz, Federico Pozuelo, Martín Alexandre, and Marcos Gutierrez. Our inaugural work was the web series Orientation-Induction-Launch, created for Radial Gallery under the curatorship of Débora Levy. The three episodes were filmed in the studios of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, in collaboration with performer Valerie Taejeong Lee Jung, who is based in the Dutch capital. This project marked the beginning of a collaborative dynamic that has continued to evolve over the years. Since then, we have developed various audiovisual and editorial projects. In 2019, we published the first issue of our journal, Prom.run. That year also saw the establishment of our base of operations at WOW Lieven in Amsterdam. Today, the collective consists of Javier Ruiz and Federico Pozuelo. In 2021, after becoming a Stichting (Foundation) in Amsterdam, we expanded our activities, collaborating with and receiving funding from organizations such as Amsterdam Fund for the Arts, OT301, Institute of Network Cultures, W139, and De Appel. After institutionalizing through the Stichting, initially formed by Barbara Krulik, Alexander Weiss, and Albert Mateu, the foundation is now undergoing a process of transformation. Currently, Barbara Krulik and Martin Alonso are managing the Stichting, and we aim to welcome a new member in 2025. Internationally, we have showcased our work at Circuitos Sala de Arte Joven (Madrid), Parco Arte Vivente (Turin), Tipolitografia Il Seme (Carrara), and the National Museum of Natural Sciences (Madrid), among other venues.
Strategie
Stichting PROM Art Collective seeks to explore alternative approaches to art production across three key levels: i) Translating and Publishing Research Materials We aim to make significant research materials from Spanish, Italian, and French sources available for the first time in English. By doing so, we contribute to the cultural debate in the Netherlands and make these works accessible to broader European audiences. For example, in our magazine Prom.run, we published The Aesthetics of Decoupling by Jordi Claramonte Arrufat and What is the Purpose of Spanish Art? by Tomás Ruiz-Rivas. In 2023, we released Intermittent Fevers, a book exploring the history of malaria and its connections between Italy, Java, and Amsterdam. Collaborators on this project include artist Juan Arturo García, Isadora Neves Marques, and art historian Alessandra Franetovich. ii) Producing Artworks and Films Our collective embraces a multidisciplinary approach, combining research and visual art production. Beyond publishing our findings, we expand our investigations into diverse media, exploring different meanings and forms of representation to engage audiences effectively. Through exhibitions, cinematic projects, and cultural critiques, we examine subjects from both metaphorical and analytical perspectives. This dual approach allows us to address topics comprehensively, enriching the dialogue around our chosen themes. iii) Panel Discussions and Workshops Actively participating in the Dutch cultural debate is central to our mission. By organizing and contributing to open discussions, workshops, and debates, we foster collective reflection involving platforms and individuals from various fields. Over the years, we have been invited to participate in numerous events in Amsterdam and internationally, contributing our unique perspective to these conversations.
